CHSU Students Make their Mark at the 2017 CAPSLEAD Conference

The 15th annual California Pharmacy Student Leadership (CAPSLEAD) Conference was held from March 11–12, 2017 at the Embassy Suites Ontario Airport in Ontario, California. Since its inception in 2003, the CAPSLEAD Conference endeavors to provide student leaders at California pharmacy schools with an opportunity to (a) learn more about leadership, teamwork, negotiation and conflict management; (b) build effective time and team management techniques; (c) interact with pharmacy faculty and other student pharmacists; and (d) learn about critical issues facing pharmacy leaders.

With the 2017 cohort, over 1,030 future pharmacy leaders have participated in the 15 years of the program’s existence. This year’s conference included 11 participating pharmacy schools, including California Health Sciences University (CHSU); California Northstate University; Chapman University; Keck Graduate Institute; Loma Linda University (host school); Touro University; University of California, San Diego; University of California, San Francisco; University of Southern California; University of the Pacific; and Western University.

Each school sets its own criteria for selecting representatives who are identified as student leaders. Student teams are then assigned a patient care task. Teams began work on their assignment during the conference, continue working on their projects upon returning to their respective schools, then conclude their selected assignment by making a presentation at either the CPhA or CSHP annual meeting.

The seven P1 and one P2 student representatives from CHSU included: Sydney Austin, Thor Enggaard, Amanda Key, Emelia Maglieri, Deniz Najjari Sadeghi, Clement Ndikum, Johnny Yang, and Wameng (Evan) Yang. The faculty advisors were Drs. Robert Clegg, Patty Havard, and Stan Snowden.

This year, the CAPSLEAD students representing CHSU selected the topic, “Prescription Drug Reporting System: The Opioid Epidemic,” as their group project which, upon completion, will be presented as a poster at the Western Pharmacy Exchange in April 2018.
